Intel and AMD Team up To Fight off NVIDIA

Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), who have been bitter rivals for decades, unveiled a partnership on a PC chip, which will use an Intel processor and an AMD graphics unit.

The two companies have agreed to partner on a PC chip to fight off a common competitor who is the new bully on the block, NVIDIA.

"Our collaboration with Intel expands the installed base for AMD Radeon GPUs and brings to market a differentiated solution for high-performance graphics," said Scott Herkelman, vice president and general manager, AMD Radeon Technologies Group, in the press release.

Designed by Intel, the new product will integrate an Intel core processor together with a semi-custom Radeon graphic chip and second-generation high bandwidth memory (HBM2) into one package, AMD said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Intel revealed that the chip is intended for laptops that are thin and lightweight but powerful enough to run high-end and complex video games, attributes that lately have been driving sales in an otherwise waning market for personal computers.

"This new semi-custom GPU puts the performance and capabilities of Radeon graphics into the hands of an expanded set of enthusiasts who want the best visual experience possible."

NVIDIA has some of the best gaming chips, which can be seen in the Nintendo Switch platform. AMD is in the Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation.

That said, it's hard to knock Intel right now. The stock is on a monster run, up 17% over the past month after reporting a strong quarter and it is currently digesting its acquisition of Mobileye, a move that will help the company take on NVIDIA in self-driving cars.

Gaming PCs typically require both Intel processors and high-end graphics chips from AMD or NVIDIA. Intel’s new product give it a shot at some of the revenue that usually goes to those graphics chips while generating new sales for AMD and muscling in on NVIDIA’s dominance in graphics units.
